Why we love teaching kids photography… AND a huge announcement at the end!

“The camera is an insturment that teaches people how to see with our a camera.” – Dorthea Lange Kids + Photography… it’s a combination I can’t ever get enough of! Kim and I have talked about writing a kids photography book for years! There’s just not a lot out there, and we have so much to say we can’t possibly cover it in a 2 hour class. So, why? Why bother handing a camera to a child? Why sign them up for a photography class? There are several...
Winter Photography Scavenger Hunt

Winter Photography Scavenger Hunt

Is it cold and snowy where you are? Go for a hike, and bring your kids and camera!! The world is so beautiful covered in a layer of magical snow. Also follow the link at the end of this post to view some eye candy from another photographer friend, KC Crow, an Orange County Family Photographer. Today was another cold snow day, and I decided to make it a little more fun by coming up with a Winter Wonderland photo scavenger hunt. We had a blast and I wanted to share some snow photography tips and...

Beauti- FALL with the Gilliland Girls

It’s here! The cooler weather is proof, and finally Holton’s trees are in their full glory!! Fall… where have you been? We love you so! We had a little session with the Gilliland Gals the other night and tomorrow we look forward to our November Heritage Sessions, then a long winters sleep. Just kidding. We are busy with some amazing photography guides. (These are for you! You can finally learn to use your big camera!) There’s no time to sleep. Stay tuned for more on...
The Kids found the flying pig

The Kids found the flying pig

There was no school in our area last Thursday, so we took the opportunity to host a little photography hike. Amy likes to hide weird and silly things for kids to find during our Adventure Guide Photo hikes. Often it is a little gnome, but today it as a colorful flying pig (made of metal and stolen from her in-laws backyard, not a real flying pig, silly). ¬†We headed out for an exciting hour of photography… a bit windy but otherwise a great day for an adventure. Everyone had a list of...
Wild Child Adventure Workshop – Free photography nature hike!

Wild Child Adventure Workshop – Free photography nature hike!

It’s about to get really colorful outside! Let’s go on a photo hike and capture some nature and color together. Because there’s no school for Holton, we thought it would be fun to do a photography walk. (Educational too!) Kids and parents are invited to join us on a walk around Banner Creek’s amazing trails. Hopefully we can capture a variety of colors and maybe… just maybe some wildlife! Meet Kim and I (and our kids!) behind Banner at the start of the trail. We...
How to start teaching your younger child about photography

How to start teaching your younger child about photography

Handing off an expensive phone or camera is a little scary, but even younger kids (with guidance) can do really well. Kids love to explore and to capture what is going on around them. They love to photograph their pets, toys, home, and even you. Recently my daughter youngest daughter has really become interested. I bought a used Sony a5000 and a 50 1.8 lens for my eleven year old son (which he very soon got too busy to care about!… that is a different story.) So we had this really great...
