It’s a beautiful day, so that means it’s ok to open up the beehives and make sure “the girls” are doing ok. I was excited to see all of our hives at home doing well, even a couple bursting at the seams with bees and POLLEN coming in on the bee’s legs! Yayyy! While nectar from flowers is the main ingredient in honey and a bee’s source of energy, pollen is the main source of protein for honey bees. It’s the main ingredient in “bee bread”, made by the nurse bees and fed to larva. It’s hard to say where this pollen came from… it might be from a silver maple or pussy willow starting to bloom. I’m happy they are finding it!
Charlotte helped me out today in our apiary. She didn’t want to, but I kind of made her because she wasn’t having a very productive morning. Teens mope around sometimes (well mine does), and I know how great nature and bees are for lifting spirits a little higher, so I forced her to come with me. Guess what? She had bees crawling on her gloves and stood to observe the open hive for the longest time. I watched her playing with the bees and saw a little smile beneath the bee suit. See, moms just know. You may not have a beehive, but time outside watching nature is never a waste.
It’s that time of year, and I am so ready! Did you know I’ve been publishing books?? You probably did… I might talk about it some. 🙂 Anyway, The Beehive was the first inspection notebook that I published and sell on Amazon! I also published a couple of others with similar interiors. The Hive Inspection Notebook (it’s smaller) and The Queen Bee Inspection Notebook, for female beekeepers! I have a couple more in the works. One for kid beekeepers that I am really excited about!
There you have it! Spring is going to happen… the bees say so! If your allergies are about to go nuts, go get yourself some local honey asap! We still have a few bottles for sale at Eubanks Custom Woodworks! (mom and dad’s honey and some of mine!) We are hoping for an amazing honey crop this summer.
I hope you enjoy the sunshine today, and if you ever want to visit the hives (or send your moody teen), just hit me up! I have extra suits! 🙂
